Telemedicine

Appointments are conducted both in-person and via telehealth. For an in-person appointment at our Greenwood, Indiana office, please see our ‘Contact Us’ page for our address and Google Map. The delivery of healthcare services through audio/visual connection is known as telemedicine. As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner currently licensed in the state of Indiana and Washington, the provider can treat patients aged 13 and older via telemedicine who are physically present in Washington State at the time of the appointment. A provider-patient relationship must be established before treatment, which occurs when the provider agrees to undertake the patient’s diagnosis and the client agrees that the provider will diagnose and/or treat him or her.

Devices Needed for Telehealth: You will need a device for a video call, which can be a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer with a good internet speed.

Intake

To streamline the intake process, you will receive, complete, and return the intake paperwork via your patient portal that you will be required to create. Intake paperwork is required prior to the initial evaluation. Please be sure to enter as much information as possible when creating your patient portal because some of the information will be required to send medications to the pharmacy.

Vital Signs

Because of the physiological effects of medications, it is important that the provider monitors your vital signs regularly and orders laboratory work as needed during your treatment. Surround Me Mental Health PLLC highly recommends that you check your vital signs (blood pressure, pulse, weight, oxygen saturation) 10-15 minutes prior to each telehealth appointment. These vital signs will be assessed by staff at each office visit.

Initial Visit

Initial evaluation is approximately 60 to 90 minutes. You will receive a notification via your confirmed email address to join the HIPAA-compliant telehealth meeting via audio-visual connection. At the end of the initial evaluation session, the provider will provide you a provisional diagnosis; treatment recommendation, which is usually psychopharmacotherapy and supportive psychotherapy; information about how to complete laboratory work/diagnostic test; and a follow up appointment date.

Referral to Psychotherapists: If a referral to a psychotherapist is needed for your therapeutic need, your psychiatric provider will discuss this with you.

Medication During Initial Visit: Occasionally, based on the outcome of the initial psychiatric evaluation, prescription of medication will be postponed until the next visit to allow more time for discussion of the results of laboratory work/diagnostic test or the discussion of the patient’s concerns regarding initiating medication. If medication is indicated, we will discuss options, indications, possible side effects, and alternative treatment.

Follow-Up Appointments

The frequency of follow up visits, which are approximately 30 minutes, is different for each client and will depend on the individual’s current mental health status.

Scope of Practice

For the provider to adhere to his scope of practice, the provider may not be able to treat you for certain medical conditions, such as those outside of the role of a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, at which time the patient will be encouraged to see his or her primary care provider or specialist.
